Abby is the main antagonist of The Last of Us 2, being the primary goal of Ellie’s revenge mission. She also acts as the secondary playable character within the story, as about halfway through The Last of Us 2 players must take on the role of Abby and effectively replay the events of the game from her perspective. Eventually, this leads to the final conflict between both Ellie and Abby, where Abby always survives no matter what the player does.

While some have taken this to mean that The Last of Us 3 will see Ellie and Abby team up, modder Speclizer isn’t exactly happy to leave Abby alive, and wondered whether the game’s files would allow her to be killed. To get the answer, The Last of Us Part 2 modder gave themselves guns in the final emotional fight of the game. However, even with plenty of bullets sent her way, Abby keeps getting up, proving that she cannot be killed.
Not entirely satisfied with the outcome, Speclizer then went on to see if they could change any other aspects of The Last of Us Part 2’s story. First, they tried to save Joel by having Ellie no-clip into the room where he is being killed, but the NPCs surrounding Joel take no notice even as Ellie is filling them with bullet holes. Later in the story, when Ellie is being pinned down by a sniper that turns out to be Joel’s brother Tommy, again Speclizer tries to kill the NPC. Once more, the important character is proven to be unkillable.
It seems that the story of The Last of Us 2 is not meant to be changed. Like most games, being able to kill important characters would ruin both the story and gameplay for the future, so the developers have ensured no stray bullet could finish off Abby or any other vital NPC. It seems that developer Naughty Dog did make the right choices for The Last of Us Part 2’s story in the end anyway, as the game won Game of the Year at 2020’s Game Awards.
The Last of Us 2 is out now on PlayStation 4.
