A poll held by Riot Games early last year allowed fans the opportunity to vote between three different themes to be featured in a future skin line for League of Legends. Players were asked to choose between the dark and moody Crime City Nightmare, the slick and suave Debonair 2.0, and the Pokemon-inspired Monster Tamer themes. While Crime City Nightmare took a convincing victory with almost half of the global votes, Debonair 2.0 won China’s vote and Riot also said they would consider Monster Tamer later on. Now, League of Legends has officially unveiled Monster Tamer skins for three champions.

A new video posted to the League of Legends Twitter account shows off the first three skins in the new Monster Tamer thematic with Veigar, Kog’Maw, and Lulu featured. The three skins feature each champion with smaller companion characters made to resemble the style of Pokemon’s fantastical creatures. Each skin also features several smaller references to the Pokemon franchise. One of Veigar’s abilities creates PCs similar to Pokemon’s storage system and Kog’Maw’s recall animation features its tiny creatures emerging from tall grass.
League’s new Pokemon-inspired cosmetics would not be the first time the MOBA has paid homage to other popular video games. The Arcade series of skins takes inspiration from classic arcade games and has featured multiple classic game-inspired alternate appearances for champions like Riven and Miss Fortune. Other skin themes like Warring Kingdoms and Beast Hunter have references to popular modern game franchises like Dynasty Warriors and Monster Hunter. Riot has even included some references to its own games like Ruined King as skins within League of Legends.
League of Legends’ new Monster Tamer skins come fresh off one of the return of one of the game’s most popular skin lines. The most recent update saw the return of the Star Guardian skin line with a plethora of new magical girl skins for several champions including Akali, Syndra, and Taliyah. League of Legends also has several major champion reworks in development for characters like Udyr and Aurelion Sol. League’s Monster Tamer skins pays tribute to one of gaming’s most legendary franchises and should be a great pickup for Pokemon fans.
